Chapter Activity:
Tell Interested Families Exactly How You Can Help
Communicate with parents of seniors in your local high school(s) half-way through the first semester (mid- to late-October) about how your chapter can assist them in planning for financing postsecondary education. Among the things to mention:
Chapter scholarship opportunity details – where to get applications, the deadlines, where completed applications should be delivered, when decisions are made, etc.
Chapter-sponsored seminars – college financial aid nights
Lists of credible information sources on admissions, financial aid, etc.
Be sure your information is compatible with what the local guidance office(s) is providing – request the Guidance Director’s input and support. Also, keep these tactics in mind:
Get “to the parents of” labels from the local high school guidance or business office.
More than 200 letters can be sent bulk rate for the lowest cost. Inquire about this at your local post office.
Conduct financial aid seminars in the late fall. Many chapters find that when they hold “basic informational seminars” prior to the regular financial aid nights that many high schools hold in December and January, parents are better able to grasp the information shared on the formal financial aid night because it is more familiar and less daunting.
For a variation on this parent and chapter contact, communicate with all parents of enrolled high school juniors halfway through second semester (mid-April or early May) about seminars your chapter is sponsoring on college admissions and financial aid. Get labels from the school department. Postcards are a great device. Invite the Admissions and Financial Aid Directors from one or more Collegiate Partners near you to participate. Conduct the admissions session before the end of junior year so parents can incorporate college tour and other relevant information over the summer. If your guidance office already has seminars like this, encourage them to include appropriate representatives from Collegiate Partners in your area. Also encourage them to include your chapter’s role in the college preparation cycle.
