Chapter Activity: Highlight Chapter Occasions

You can use natural events in the life of your chapter to gain additional publicity and build even greater community good will. Examples include:

· Mark every chapter anniversary with a public announcement – it’s also a great opportunity for an annual feature story.

· Mark every chapter annual meeting with a press release.

· Include photos and a history of the chapter.

· If possible make the annual meeting a luncheon or dinner meeting.

· When the annual meeting coincides with a change in leadership, make an even greater splash announcing the election of a new president and other officers.

· Be sure to recognize retiring directors – give them Dollars for Scholars certificates of appreciation (available on the Dollars for Scholars web site) as tokens of the chapter’s thanks and to be sure they stay connected to the chapter’s work.

· Be sure to recognize newly elected directors.

· Look for chapter milestones to celebrate, and bring them to the attention of your community.

· Special anniversaries such as the 5th or 10th, etc.

· Special recipient thresholds, such as reaching the 100th recipient, or the 1,000th recipient, etc.

· Special financial thresholds, such as $5,000 in total cumulative chapter awards or $10,000 or $50,000, etc.

· Special fundraising accomplishments, such as reaching a previously stated fundraising goal or starting a chapter endowment.

· Keep track of recipients and invite past recipients (and their parents) to attend awards ceremonies, annual meetings, to participate in a chapter feature story, or to help with a fundraiser.

· Invest in a banner to hang across your community’s main thoroughfare. Use it to bring community attention to your chapter on any and all special or noteworthy occasions such as a special fundraiser or chapter event or application deadline.

· Provide local civic groups and school-based organizations with regular information on your chapter’s activities and important events to include in their own newsletters. This is especially effective for those groups that already support your chapter.
