Keynote Presentation
Show Me The Money: How Families Pay for College
Sandy Baum, Professor Emerita of Economics at Skidmore College and an independent higher education policy analyst, is speaking about the price of college and how families are paying those costs.

She will review the wide range of options available to students and the different financial aid policies at different types of institutions. Sandy has written extensively on issues relating to college access, college pricing, student aid policy, student debt, affordability, and other aspects of higher education finance.

Sandy is a sought-after expert who is frequently quoted in the national media and has testified before Senate and House committees on matters of higher education finance. Her work is prominently featured in the 2010 Almanac of Higher Education, where she wrote the lead article on student demographics.   • Fundraising: What More Can Chapters Do?
    Kit Briem, Director, Major Gifts
    Kit will share what she has learned from her extensive experience in the fundraising field. She will help your chapter evaluate what it is already doing and consider new techniques to enhance your results. Come prepared to share your successes.s.
  • 2010 New England Chapter of the Year: Why It Stood Out
    Town of Billerica (MA) Scholarship Foundation
    Chapter volunteers will share their successful strategies in three key areas: volunteer recruitment and retention, fundraising, and marketing/public relations.

A Shared Vision for Our Collective Future

Scholarship America and Dollars for Scholars are commemorating a 50 year history, giving us an opportunity to celebrate our past and build for our future.

Scholarship America’s new President and CEO, Lauren Segal, will be offering a shared vision of the future, developed with input from staff and volunteer leaders, and the Future Letters Project. She also wants to hear from you, and how you envision Scholarship America and Dollars for Scholars chapters working together to create a lasting impact in your community and across the country. During this session, there will be opportunities for you to share your perspectives and questions.

Afternoon Breakout Sessions

  • Chapter Succession Planning: The Next 50 Years
    This will be a facilitated session with regional and national staff. This session will review Scholarship America’s upcoming 50th anniversary in 2011. Participants will discuss Scholarship America’s plans for marking this important occasion and how your chapter can participate in the
    celebration. Come prepared to think about what your chapter could be doing in 2061.
  • Chapter Board Development:
    How Is Your Chapter Helping Itself?

    Lynne Zervas, Director of Chapter Support Services, Northeast Dollars for Scholars
    Lynne will review strategies chapters use to develop their boards. She will define what that means and how board development can make your chapter stronger and more resilient. Come prepared to share your successful strategies.
  • Technology and Chapters: An Integrated Dollars for Scholars Platform
    Terry Kraling, Chief Operating Officer, Scholarship America
    This session will cover current Scholarship America technology offerings, easy ways to get your chapter online, and other areas of interest to volunteers. In addition, Scholarship America representatives will review with and seek input from you about the integrated platform Scholarship America will be launching in 2011, featuring an online student application, automated reporting tools, donor management and more.
